My key shell is cracking apart. Can you replace just the shell without reprogramming the whole thing?

Yes, and this comes up a lot with these keys. The plastic housing on transponder keys takes a beating at the key ring loop and along the seams, especially after a few years of daily use. The transponder chip lives inside the shell, and as long as the chip transfers cleanly into a new housing, the programming stays intact. No relearn needed.

I bring blank shells and cut replacement blades on site. If the existing blade is worn down from years of use, this is a good time to cut a fresh one off the key code so everything is back to spec. The whole thing takes maybe fifteen minutes.

Question 2

What exactly is a transponder key, and why can't I just get a copy made at the hardware store?

A transponder key has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn the key, the ignition coil reads that chip. If the chip isn't recognized or isn't programmed to your specific vehicle, the immobilizer cuts the engine off within a couple of seconds of startup. The key turns, the engine catches, then dies. Every time.

A hardware store can cut the metal blade to match your existing key. That part works fine. But the chip inside a blank shell has no programming. The car doesn't know it. So you end up with a key that opens the door and turns the ignition but won't actually let you drive anywhere. Programming has to happen through the OBD port with the right diagnostic equipment, and the immobilizer's timed relearn has to complete fully before the key is committed to memory.

Your 2021 Tahoe also has remote functions built into the key. Those buttons need to be paired separately from the transponder learn. It's not one step, it's a sequence, and it has to be done correctly.

Question 3

The dash is showing a theft deterrent warning and the car won't start. What does that mean?

That warning is the immobilizer telling you it didn't recognize the key. Try your spare if you have one. If the spare starts the car cleanly, your primary key is the problem, either the transponder chip has failed or the key's programming degraded.

If neither key works, don't keep cranking. Repeated failed attempts can complicate the diagnostic read. Most of the time on these it's the key itself.

I bought a pre-cut replacement key online. Can you just program it, or is there a problem with that?

Bring it and I'll look at it, but there are a few things that can go wrong with keys sourced online for the 2021 Tahoe. The blade cut needs to match your ignition cylinder exactly. If the previous owner ordered by vehicle description rather than by the actual key code from your original, it may be close but not right, and a slightly wrong cut causes wear on the cylinder over time even if it turns.

The bigger issue is the chip. Some aftermarket blanks use chips that are compatible with the programming process and some don't. I've had blanks that the diagnostic equipment accepts and blanks it flat-out rejects. If the blank is good, I can program it. If it isn't, I carry stock that is confirmed to work with these vehicles. Either way, you're not walking away without a working key.

How many keys can the 2021 Tahoe hold in memory, and does adding one erase the others?

The system holds multiple keys and adding one does not wipe the others, as long as you're doing a standard add-a-key procedure and your existing working keys are present. The process writes the new key into the next available slot.

All-keys-lost is a different situation. If you have no working keys at all, the procedure clears the memory entirely and re-enrolls from scratch. That means any keys that were previously learned, including ones you didn't know about, get erased. That's actually useful if you bought a used Tahoe and want to make sure no previous keys can still operate the vehicle. Plan for the job to take longer when you're starting from zero, because the timed relearn has to complete in full before the system will accept any key as permanent.
