I was parked near Rancho Santa Fe Village on a Tuesday when the call came in. A woman visiting relatives in the area, 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, fob acting up. She said it had been getting worse over a few weeks and that morning it stopped unlocking the doors entirely. She was standing in a driveway wondering whether she needed a whole new key or just a battery.
I asked her to describe what the dash was showing. She said the vehicle was displaying a key-not-detected warning even when she held the fob right against the start button. That last part told me something. When a dead battery is the only issue, pressing the fob to the button usually wakes the system enough to start the car. The fact that it still wasn't responding that way pointed past a simple battery swap.
When I got there, I popped the fob open. The CR2032 inside was so corroded around the negative contact that the disc had a visible green ring on one face. That corrosion adds resistance right at the point where the fob needs clean voltage. New cell, cleaned contacts, closed it back up.
Still not right. Range was better but the push-button start was inconsistent. On a 2015 Tahoe that pattern, where everything half-works after a fresh battery, usually means the fob took some water at some point and the board has micro-corrosion you can't see with a naked eye.
I had a replacement fob in the van. Programmed it to her VIN on site, verified all the functions, and confirmed the vehicle security system recognized it cleanly. She was back in her day in about forty minutes. The dealer route would have meant a tow, an appointment, and days of waiting. She was visiting family. That was not going to work for her.
