2005 Acura TSX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location in Strathearn?

Depends on where I am when you call, but I give you an honest arrival estimate on the phone. Because I'm already mobile and working the area, I can usually beat the tow-then-wait dealer route without it being close. Acura service departments aren't set up for same-day walk-in key work on older models. Call, get the window, decide from there.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today?

Usually, yes. I carry blanks and programming equipment for the 2005 TSX in my service vehicle. This generation uses a specific transponder setup, and I stock for it. As long as my schedule has room and I'm not already on a job across Simi Valley when you call, same-day service is the normal outcome. The dealer's answer to that question is often "we'll need to order the key and schedule you in.

Q: I had a copy made at a hardware store and now the car cranks but won't stay running. What happened?

That's the immobilizer doing exactly what it's supposed to do. The 2005 TSX reads the transponder chip in the key every time you turn the ignition. Hardware stores and most big-box key kiosks can copy the blade cut, but they have no way to enroll the chip. So the key turns, the engine catches for a second, and then the immobilizer cuts fuel because it doesn't recognize the key. The car isn't broken. It just needs a properly programmed key.

Q: My only key is worn down and sometimes the car takes a few tries to start. Is that a key problem or something else?

Could be both, honestly. On a 20-year-old key, two things wear independently: the blade and the chip. A worn blade can slip in the cylinder and fail to turn the tumblers cleanly. A chip that's taken years of heat and keychain abuse can start reading inconsistently. If the car cranks fine but occasionally stalls right after starting, that points more toward the transponder side. If it's grinding or not turning smoothly, that's the blade and cylinder.

2005 Acura TSX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman over in Strathearn called on a weekday afternoon. Her 2005 TSX had one working key left, and she'd just snapped the head off it trying to force a sticky ignition. The metal blade was still in there.

She'd already called the Acura dealer in the area. They told her she needed a tow, then a service appointment, and they couldn't get her in until later in the week. She was looking at days without her car and a tow bill just to start the process.

I got to her driveway in Strathearn with my extraction tools and pulled the broken blade without damaging the cylinder. Once the ignition was clear, I cut a new key to her vehicle, enrolled the transponder chip, and tested it through several start cycles to confirm the immobilizer was reading it clean every time.

The whole job was done in her driveway. She didn't get towed anywhere. She didn't wait three days. She just handed me the broken key, watched me work on her hood, and drove to pick up her kids an hour later.

The dealer comparison came up when she was writing the review. She said the tow alone would have cost more than my whole visit. I believed her.

How long does a 2005 Acura TSX key replacement take?▼

For a transponder turn-key like this one, figure 20 to 40 minutes once I'm at your vehicle. There's the cutting step and the programming step, and I test through multiple start cycles before I hand it back. I don't consider it done until the car has started cleanly at least three times in a row. If you're in Strathearn or anywhere in Simi Valley, that's the window I work in.
