A guy from the Santa Susana Knolls area flagged me down, practically. He'd already had a rough morning before he even called.
His 2007 TSX key had snapped inside the door lock. Not at the ignition, at the door. He'd been running a worn key with a slight sideways bow to it for a while, and one cold morning it finally gave. The blade broke clean, with the front half lodged in the cylinder.
He called another locksmith first. That guy told him the lock cylinder had to be drilled and replaced. New cylinder, re-keying everything, and a bill that was going to hurt. He wasn't sure, so he called me for a second opinion before agreeing to anything.
I drove out to him in Simi Valley. With the right extraction tools, I worked the broken fragment out of the door lock without touching the wafer surfaces. Once it was clear, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position. That gave me the exact cut depths I needed for a new key, no original required.
The transponder chip in the broken key head was still intact inside the cracked housing. I transferred the chip into a fresh key shell, cut the new blade to the depths I'd read from the lock, and programmed the transponder to the car. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Started right up.
His lock still works. His cylinder is untouched. He paid a fraction of what the first guy had quoted him, and he drove away with a key that works exactly like the original.
The drilling recommendation wasn't wrong as a last resort. It just wasn't necessary here. That's the difference between someone who works on these all day and someone who defaults to the most invasive option when it gets complicated.
