2008 Acura TSX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost versus just adding a spare?

More. Meaningfully more. When you have a working key, adding a spare means cutting a new blade and registering the chip alongside the existing key. The immobilizer keeps everything it already knows and just adds the new one. When all keys are lost, the procedure changes. The immobilizer has to be fully reset, all previously registered chip data gets wiped, and then new keys are registered from scratch. That takes longer and costs more because of the additional steps involved.

Q: Do aftermarket keys work on the 2008 Acura TSX, and are they worth it?

On a 2008 TSX, aftermarket transponder keys generally work well. This is an older system and the aftermarket parts supply for it is mature. The chip type is well established and compatible aftermarket keys have been available for years. The thing to watch is quality. A cheap key head can crack faster than the original, and a poorly made blade can wear out a lock cylinder over time.

Q: My 2008 TSX starts sometimes and not others. Could it be the transponder key failing?

Yes, and this is one of the more common complaints on these cars. An intermittent no-start where the engine cranks but does not catch, or where a key-not-detected type warning shows on the dash, can point to a transponder chip that is starting to fail inside the key head.

Q: I have the key but I am locked out because the blade is worn and the lock is not catching. Can you help with that on site?

Yes. Worn blade, worn lock cylinder, or both. On a 2008 TSX that has been around for a while, the door lock and the key blade wear against each other over years of use. Eventually the blade does not have enough definition left to turn the cylinder reliably. I can decode the door lock on site and cut a fresh key to the correct specification, which usually solves it immediately.

2008 Acura TSX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over in the Royal/Kadota area of Simi Valley, I got a call from a guy who had been driving his 2008 TSX on one key since he bought it used. No spare. Never got around to it. The key finally gave out on him in a gym parking lot, which is about as inconvenient as it gets.

The blade had snapped clean, and what was left in his hand was not going to open a door or turn an ignition. He had done everything a person does when that happens: tried the broken piece, looked up towing options, then found me.

I decoded the lock on the door to figure out the cut without needing the broken blade, then cut a fresh key to match. The transponder chip inside the old broken key head was still reading, which meant I could work with what was there instead of going through a full all-keys-lost procedure. That saved him real time and kept the cost down.

He ended up with two working keys in about 40 minutes. I handed him the second one and told him to put it somewhere that was not his gym bag. He laughed. The dealer had quoted him a number that made him pause before he even asked about availability. He paid a fraction of that, standing next to his own car.

If your key is broken but you still have the pieces, bring them. There is more recoverable information in a cracked key than most people expect.

Acura TSX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for my 2008 Acura TSX?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the Acura dealer. The dealer will price this as a luxury brand job even though the underlying key system is shared with Honda. They will also want you to schedule an appointment, possibly tow the car in if you are stuck, and then bill you separately for the key, the cut, and the programming session.
