1997 Buick Century
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Does my 1997 Century have to go to the dealer for a replacement key?

No. Dealers will ask you to drive in or tow the car to their bay, and if you're already without a working key, that tow is an extra cost before you've even started. We come to wherever the car is sitting. The work gets done on site. No drop-off, no waiting for a callback, no appointment window.

Q: What do I need to show you to prove I own the car?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. We pull the VIN from the dashboard or the door jamb sticker and verify it matches your paperwork before we start any cutting or programming. Same standard you'd face at a dealer, but we do it on site in a few minutes instead of at a service counter.

Q: My fob buttons stopped working but the key still starts the car fine. What's going on?

On the 1997 Century, the remote and the ignition system are independent of each other. The key starting the car normally has nothing to do with the fob working or not. When the remote stops responding, the most common cause is a dead or weak CR2032 battery. Swap it first.

Q: Can I program a replacement fob myself on a 1997 Buick Century?

These late-90s GM remotes do have an onboard programming sequence that some owners have used. It involves the door lock switch and a specific sequence with the key in the ignition. The catch is that it can be finicky, and if you're adding a fob rather than replacing one, the sequence has to be done with all remotes you want active present at the same time, or the ones you skip get dropped from memory.

1997 Buick Century Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in La Colonia picked up a 1997 Buick Century from a private seller over by the bank parking lot off Saviers. Solid car, clean interior, one key. The seller mentioned getting a spare "at some point." He called the dealer first, got a quote that made him pause, and figured that was just the going rate for Buick keys. A buddy told him to call me instead.

I met him in the same lot where the sale happened. He handed me the original remote and the key. The fob felt a little light, which usually means a depleted CR2032, but he wanted a full spare set anyway. I cut a replacement key blade to match his vehicle and walked through programming the new remote on site. The whole thing took under 30 minutes, done in the parking lot, no appointment, no tow.

He tested every button himself before I packed up. Lock, unlock, all four buttons confirmed working. Then he just kind of laughed and said the dealer quote was sitting on a sticky note on his dash.

He drove out of that lot with two working keys and paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted. That's the job.
