Got a call from the Thompson Boulevard district in Ventura. A guy recovering from surgery was stuck at a medical office, on crutches, with his 2005 Buick Century sitting in the lot. His keychain remote had quit working. No lock, no unlock, no trunk. He was manually turning the key in the door and it was killing his balance on the crutches. His wife was at work and his next appointment was in two days, so waiting on a dealer wasn't going to happen.
I drove out that morning. His key was a standard GM PK3 transponder, B102 blade, with the separate L2C0007T 3-button remote clipped to the ring. The remote was the problem. I popped it open on the spot: the CR2032 was dead, and one of the battery contacts had some corrosion creep. Cleaned the contact, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and the remote lit right up.
Then I checked the PK3 side just to be thorough. Key in the ignition, SECURITY light cycled off clean, engine fired. No codes stored in the BCM. His immobilizer was happy, just the remote had been neglected.
While I was there, I programmed a spare L2C0007T remote so he'd have a backup on the ring. The whole visit took maybe 20 minutes. He stayed inside the office the entire time. Never had to call his wife, never had to get towed anywhere.
A dealer would have wanted him to bring the car in and leave it. That was never an option for him.
