Got a call from a guy over in the Ventura Keys area. His 2000 Buick Century would not crank, the THEFT SYSTEM light was solid on the dash, and the remote (ABO0204T, four-button) was doing nothing for him. He had already replaced the CR2032 in the fob twice, thinking that was the issue.
It was not the remote. The Century's PASSLOCK II system lives in the ignition lock cylinder, totally separate from the keyless entry fob. His lock cylinder's internal sensor had gone flaky, a known weak point on these W-body GMs. GM even put out a revised lock cylinder (part number 26053343) because the original sensors would drift and throw false theft codes.
I pulled up to his car, plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash, and ran the PASSLOCK relearn through the BCM. The procedure has a mandatory 10-minute wait while the system resets its stored resistance value. That part is boring. You just sit there. Then I cycled the ignition, confirmed the THEFT SYSTEM light went out, and the engine fired right up.
While I was there, I paired his replacement remote too. Quick RF learn through the BCM, tested all four buttons, lock, unlock, trunk, and panic.
He had been quoted a tow plus a full day at the dealer. I was done in his driveway in under 30 minutes, for a fraction of what they wanted.
