I got a call from a guy over in Mountclef Ridge, visiting family for Thanksgiving. He had his 2005 STS parked in the driveway and the fob had been acting up for a couple of days. By the time he called me, the door handles had stopped responding entirely and the dash was giving him a key-not-detected warning every time he approached the car. He assumed the worst.
He met me at the curb. The car was locked, he was standing there with a fob that had done nothing for two days, and his first question before I even opened the van was whether he needed an OEM fob or if aftermarket was going to be a problem.
I checked the fob he had. The CR2032 inside was original. The contacts had oxidation on one side, just enough to break the connection intermittently. I cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh cell, and the door handles woke back up on the spot.
Then he asked the real question: he wanted a second key made, and he wanted to know whether an aftermarket blank was going to hold up as a daily driver or just as a backup. Fair question. I told him what I tell everyone: the quality of the blank matters more than the brand name on the housing. I source aftermarket fobs I've tested across a lot of GM jobs, and when a batch doesn't meet the standard, it goes back. The chip is correct for the vehicle security system, the button feel is solid, and the blade is cut to his car. The only thing missing is the crest on the back.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted for an OEM fob plus the programming appointment. And he headed back to dinner with two working keys instead of none.
