2006 Cadillac STS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you erase lost or stolen fobs from my 2006 STS so they can't be used to start the car?

Yes. When new fobs are programmed, the procedure wipes the previously stored keys from the vehicle security system. Only fobs present during that session get registered. If your fob was stolen rather than just misplaced, this step matters a lot. You don't want an old fob out there that can still start your car. We handle the erase and re-register as part of the same job, so when we're done, only your new keys work.

Q: Does my 2006 Cadillac STS smart key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

Yes. There's a metal blade tucked inside the fob body. Press the release on the back and it slides out. Use it in the driver's door to get in if the fob battery is fully dead and the passive backup read through the console pocket isn't working for some reason. The blade itself is a mechanical cut matched to your door and ignition.

Q: My 2006 STS starts fine sometimes, but other times the dash shows a key warning and it won't start. Why is it inconsistent?

Intermittent no-start with a key-not-detected warning on the STS is a common complaint in forums for this generation. Nine times out of ten it points to one of three things: a battery that's borderline low and can't hold signal under load, a fob contact issue where the battery isn't seated flat, or early failure of the fob's internal circuit.

Q: I bought a replacement fob for my 2006 STS online. Can I program it myself?

No. The STS smart key system does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. Registering a new fob requires professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you bought a fob online, it still needs to be programmed before it will do anything. Bring the fob and the car together, and I'll handle the rest.

2006 Cadillac STS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy over in Old Town Simi had been nursing his 2006 STS fob for a couple weeks before he called. The door handles weren't responding reliably, range had dropped to almost nothing, and the dash was throwing a key-not-detected warning every other start. He'd already swapped the CR2032 himself, but he bought the battery at a gas station and didn't check whether it seated flat against the contacts.

I met him in a parking lot near the Old Town area. Popped the fob open on my tailgate. The battery he'd put in was slightly bowed and only making contact on one edge. Cleaned the terminals, seated a fresh CR2032 correctly, and tested the door handles. Range came back. The warning cleared on the next start cycle.

That fixed the immediate symptom. But while I was there I ran the fob through a full button test and confirmed all five buttons were responding cleanly. On a fob this age, you want to know before you leave that nothing else is quietly failing.

He mentioned he'd almost driven to the dealer. I told him what that visit would have looked like: appointment, diagnostic fee, probably a new fob quote before anyone even opened the existing one. He shook his head. The fix took less than twenty minutes and cost him a fraction of what they wanted.

Cadillac STS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2006 Cadillac STS?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. Dealer all-keys-lost on an STS means a tow, a wait for an appointment, a diagnostic fee, and then the key programming on top of that. The total adds up fast, and same-day service is not guaranteed. For the STS, all-keys-lost requires diagnostic equipment to access the vehicle security system through the OBD port, wipe the stored key memory, and register new fobs. It cannot be done with a button sequence or ignition trick.
