Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the tools to pull a broken key fragment out of an ignition cylinder without pulling the whole cylinder or damaging it. Once the piece is out, I can cut a new key from the lock itself or from your vehicle's key code data, then program the new fob on site. Start with the battery. A weak CR2032 is the most common trigger for that warning on this generation of STS, and it can act inconsistently, working fine in the morning and failing in the afternoon when cabin temperature climbs. Swap in a fresh CR2032, make sure it seats flat with good contact, and test it a few times before assuming the fob is dead.

If a new battery doesn't clear it, the next thing to check is whether the fob has been physically damaged or exposed to water. The 2007 STS fob is not sealed, and moisture inside the case can corrode the board contacts even if it looks dry from the outside.

If none of that resolves it, the problem could be in the vehicle side: the antenna that reads the fob, the body control module, or a programming issue. That's when you call me. Programming requires a professional-grade diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port to write the new fob into the vehicle's security system. The fob you bought online is just hardware until that step happens. It also needs to carry the correct factory FCC ID to match this vehicle. If the listing wasn't specific about compatibility with this exact model and year, there's a real chance it won't pair correctly even with the right equipment. Bring the fob and I'll tell you if it's usable before we go further.

Does the 2007 STS have a backup way to start the car if the fob battery dies completely?

It's not a long-term fix, just a get-out-of-trouble measure. Replace the CR2032 as soon as you can.
