2010 Cadillac STS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More. Always more, and it's not close. When you have a working fob, adding a spare is a faster, simpler job. When all keys are gone, the vehicle security system has to be fully reset and reprogrammed from the OBD port, the existing key memory gets wiped, and the new fob gets enrolled from scratch. There are mandatory timed wait cycles built into that process that you can't skip.

Q: Are aftermarket fobs cheaper and will they actually work on the STS?

Aftermarket fobs cost less upfront, but the STS is worth being careful with. The fob has to match the correct specifications for your vehicle -- not just look like the right one -- and needs to be programmed through diagnostic equipment either way. A fob that pairs and unlocks the doors but has a button that doesn't respond reliably is a common complaint with lower-quality aftermarket units. I carry OEM-spec replacements verified for the 2010 STS.

Q: My STS start button is unresponsive but the doors unlocked fine. What's going on?

This one comes up a lot with these proximity setups. The door handle antennas and the interior antennas that the start button relies on are separate. So the car can pick up the fob outside at the door and unlock just fine, but then lose it once you're inside -- especially if the fob battery is getting weak or if there's interference from something in your bag or pocket near the fob.

Q: Can I use the metal key inside the fob to start the 2010 STS if the fob stops working?

The emergency insert key in the STS fob is there to get you into the car mechanically -- it operates the door lock cylinder. It does not start the vehicle on its own the way a traditional ignition key would. The start system on the STS is tied to the proximity fob being recognized by the car's security system, not to the metal key blade.

2010 Cadillac STS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in La Colonia, I got a call around midnight from a guy who had been standing in his driveway for forty minutes trying to figure out what happened to his 2010 STS.

The fob had been getting weird for about a week. Sometimes the door handle wouldn't respond on the first touch. Sometimes it would take two or three tries to get the start button to register. He figured it was just being temperamental and kept putting off dealing with it. Then it stopped working entirely, and he was locked out with no backup key.

By the time I pulled up, he had already looked up flatbed rates and was mentally preparing to wait until the dealer opened in the morning. He looked genuinely surprised when I told him I could handle it in the driveway.

I connected to the OBD port, ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the GM proximity system, and registered the new fob on site. The whole sequence has a built-in wait period baked into the process -- that is just how the system works, not a complication -- so I walked him through what was happening while we waited it out. Once it finished, I tested every button, both door handles, and confirmed the start function before I packed up.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer would have charged, and he didn't have to pay for a tow on top of it. The part that seemed to stick with him was just that it was done in his own driveway at midnight instead of sometime the next afternoon.

Cadillac STS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2010 Cadillac STS key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Dealers charge a significant amount for smart key replacement on these, and if you have no working key, you're adding a tow bill on top of that and waiting until business hours. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in Oxnard, do the programming on site, and the price covers everything. No tow, no separate line items, no waiting.
