Got a call from a guy near the Oxnard Auto Center who had a 2011 Cadillac STS sitting dead in a parking lot. Zero keys. His only fob went through the wash a week earlier, worked fine after drying out, then just stopped one morning. I pulled up and popped the lower dash to get at the OBD port. The STS runs GM's Passlock/PK3+ theft deterrent through the body control module, and on an AKL job the BCM needs its old key data wiped before it will accept anything new. I connected my ACDP to read the BCM EEPROM as a safety backup, then ran the all-keys-lost procedure through the diagnostic port. The STS uses a Hitag2 transponder inside the M3N5WY7777A fob, and once the module cleared, registration of the new 5-button smart key went clean.
He was sitting on a bench the whole time, watching me work on the steering column area. When the engine turned over he just nodded slowly, like he was making sure it was real.
