Out at Faria Beach, just off the highway where the houses back right up to the water, a woman was staying for the week and her only fob stopped responding. Not dead, just wrong. She had swapped the battery herself a few days earlier and thought she was done with it.
The car would not detect the key from outside. Touch the door handle, nothing. Opened it up and found a CR2032 sitting in a CR2450 housing. Smaller diameter, so it had been rocking slightly every time she set the fob down or dropped it in her bag. Contact was intermittent, not gone.
Swapped in the correct CR2450, seated it properly, and the fob came back immediately. Walked every button, confirmed touch-unlock on both front handles, and had her do a full lock-unlock cycle from thirty feet away on the beach side just to confirm range was back to normal.
She did not need a new fob. She did not need a dealer appointment. The fix was a battery, the right battery, installed correctly. Done in the driveway with the sound of the waves in the background, and she had a working key for the rest of her trip.
