A woman flagged me down near Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard on a Sunday. She had a 1997 Ford Thunderbird that would crank for about two seconds and die. Classic PATS rejection. She told me another locksmith had already tried and failed, said the module was bad, and left.
The module was fine. I see this a lot with PATS I cars. The security learn sequence on these has a timed countdown, roughly ten to fifteen minutes per key, and if you rush it or lose connection partway through, the key data writes temporarily but does not stick in permanent memory. The PCM thinks it has a key. Then it doesn't.
I checked the mechanical cut first with my Lishi FO38 pick and decoder to verify it matched the original wafer depths. The cut was actually correct. The problem was entirely on the programming side. I connected through the OBD-II port with my IM608 Pro, cleared the old failed key data from the PCM, and ran a clean PATS I learn with the full security timer. Watched the theft indicator on the dash go from rapid blinking to a brief flash and then off. That is the confirmation.
Started the car. No two-second stall. Ran it for a full minute, cycled it off and on three more times, solid every time. She stood there watching the dash like she expected it to quit again.
She had already paid the first guy. I could not fix that part. But the car was running right.
