Over at Ventura Harbor, a guy flagged me down after I wrapped another job in the area. He'd had a spare key made somewhere a couple weeks earlier and at first it was fine. Then it started acting up, cranking the engine but cutting out almost immediately. By the time he called me he'd already convinced himself it was a fuel pump issue.

The car was doing exactly what it's supposed to do when it doesn't recognize the key.
I programmed a fresh key on site, using the fob he already had the factory FCC ID matched up and the battery was a CR2032 that still tested fine so I left it. Ran the immobilizer registration, confirmed both keys, and let him start it a few times himself so he could feel the difference.
He'd already spent money on a key that didn't work right. The dealer quote he pulled up on his phone was a reminder of what he could have paid from the start. What he paid me was a fraction of that, and the car has been right ever since.
