2016 Hyundai Tucson Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone over near Mira Monte, not far from the community center. He had a 2016 Tucson with a key that cranked the engine every time, but the car would fire for about two seconds and die. He'd already paid someone to do the job. The other locksmith left telling him the immobilizer module was bad.

He sounded worn out when he called me. That "starts then dies" pattern is the immobilizer cutting fuel after it sees an unconfirmed key signal. It means the module is doing its job, not failing at it.

I connected through the OBD port, pulled up the key registration data, and found exactly what I expected. The previous job had written a temporary key record but never completed the confirmation cycle. Hyundai's system has a timed registration sequence, and if you don't let it run all the way through and confirm the commit, the key exists in a limbo state. Engine sees a signal, starts to run, immobilizer checks the stored record, finds it incomplete, shuts it down.

I cleared the partial registration, ran a clean full sequence, waited out the timed cycle, and confirmed the key was fully stored before I ever touched the start button. Then I started the car, let it run, and walked him through what the confirmation screen showed so he could see it himself this time.

He'd already paid once for a job that wasn't finished. I couldn't fix that part. I could make sure he drove home.
