I got a call out to the College area of Ventura on a Tuesday morning. A Tucson owner had already replaced the fob battery herself, which was the right first move. But the fob still would not lock the doors from more than a few feet away, and the push-button start was throwing a key-not-detected warning even with the fob sitting on the center console.
She had already ordered a replacement fob online before she called me. I have seen that move before. The fob she bought was the correct style for the vehicle, which was actually good news, but it was sitting in her passenger seat completely unprogrammed.
I popped open her existing fob first. The CR2032 she had put in was a store-brand cell, and it was testing low on my meter right out of the package. That happens more than people expect. I swapped it for a quality cell, reseated it, and the range came back immediately. So the old fob was still good.
Then we got into the fob she had bought online. I connected to the OBD port, accessed the vehicle security system through my diagnostic tool, read the pin data, and registered the new fob alongside the original. The whole sequence has a timed countdown built into the relearn process, so you just have to wait it out. No way to rush it.
After that I walked the car. Every button on both fobs, door lock and unlock, push-button start three times in a row, and I checked that the handle sensors on both front doors were responding to touch. Everything clean.
She ended up with two working fobs instead of one, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted for a single key replacement. The online fob just needed the right hands on the right tool to finish the job.
