Over in Cross at Grant Park in Ventura, a Tucson owner flagged me down mid-job. Not my customer. She saw me programming a key on another car in the lot and walked over holding her fob in two pieces.
The shell on her SY5HMFNA04 had cracked right at the seam. The battery door was gone. She had been holding it together with a hair tie for about a month. The CR2032 kept shifting, so some days the car wouldn't detect the key, and other days it worked fine. She thought the car was the problem.
I pulled the internals out of the broken shell. The ID46 chip board was fine, contacts clean, no corrosion. Swapped everything into a new aftermarket shell, fresh CR2032 seated correctly, and tested.
This is the part I don't skip. I walked 25 feet out, pressed lock. Walked back, pressed unlock. Hit the trunk release. Hit panic. Then three consecutive push-to-starts with the fob in my pocket, never touching the button with it. Passive entry on both front doors. Every function, verified in person, while she watched.
She kept saying she thought she needed a whole new key from the dealer. The electronics were fine. It was a shell swap and a battery, done on site for a fraction of what the dealer wanted just for the appointment.
