Had a call from Linden Avenue in Carpinteria. Customer's 2021 Tucson Limited wouldn't respond to her only smart key. Push button start just clicked. Nothing.
She'd already tried the CR2032 swap. Still dead. The TQ8-FOB-4F28 fob looked perfect from the outside, no cracks, no obvious damage. But when I opened it up on her kitchen counter, there it was: battery acid had leaked and eaten through two traces on the PCB near the CR2032 holder.
I showed her the green corrosion trail. The chip itself, a DST-AES, was fine. Just needed a new board. I had a donor fob in the van, so I transplanted her chip and emergency blade to the fresh housing. Paired it through the OBD port with my Autel IM608. The whole PCB swap and programming took maybe 25 minutes.
While I had the diagnostic tool connected, I programmed her a second fob. She'd been running one key for three years since buying it used. The dealer quoted her two weeks out and wanted way more than what I charged for both keys on the spot.
