Got a call from a guy pulled over on the shoulder off the 101 near Carpinteria State Beach. His 2020 Tucson key blade had snapped clean in the ignition cylinder. Half the blade still jammed in the lock, the other half between his thumb and finger.
He had already called another locksmith. That guy quoted a full ignition cylinder replacement over the phone. New cylinder, new keys, the works. He hung up and tried me.
I drove out and took a look. The wafers inside the cylinder were fine. No damage. I slid my HY14 Lishi in alongside the broken fragment and walked it out without touching the wafer surfaces. Once I had the piece out clean, I decoded the lock right off the wafer readings, cut a fresh HY22 blade, and programmed the Hitag3 transponder through the OBD-II port. His fob, the TQ8-FOB-4F11 four-button smart key, was perfectly good. He just needed a new blade and a chip paired to the immobilizer.
No drilling. No cylinder swap. No tow to the dealer. His original ignition works with the new key exactly like before.
He kept looking at the extracted fragment like he expected the lock to be destroyed. It wasn't. That is what lock decoding is. I read the car, cut to it, and leave everything the way I found it. The car looked the same when I left, minus the broken piece of metal.
