Got a call from a guy over near Promenade Park in Ventura. His 2002 I35 had one key left, and the blade was worn so thin it barely turned the ignition cylinder. He'd been jiggling it for weeks.
He told me he almost didn't call because he figured he'd have to go to the Infiniti dealer and wait for a VIN-cut key. He'd called them already. They wanted him to tow it in, order the key, come back in a few days, then pay for the programming appointment on top of it all. That's a lot of steps for a car key.
I pulled up to his spot, decoded the lock with my NI04 Lishi right off the driver door, and cut a fresh NSN14 blade on site. The I35 uses the NATS5 system with an ID46 chip, so I connected through the OBD-II port, pulled the 4-digit PIN from the BCM, and registered the new transponder. Whole thing took maybe 25 minutes.
Before I left, I tested the new key three times: start, off, start, off, start. Then let it sit for a few minutes and tested cold start once more. Intermittent chip read failures like to hide, so I don't rush that part.
He kept his old worn key as a backup. Smart move. Even a rough blade with a working chip can bail you out if you lose the good one.
