Why is Infiniti key replacement so expensive at the dealer?

A few things stack up. The 2004 I35 uses a transponder key that has to be programmed to the vehicle, and dealers charge for the blank, the cut, the programming labor, and their shop rate on top of all of it. For a vehicle this age, some dealers also have to look up whether they even carry the blank anymore, and if they do not have it in stock, you are waiting on an order before anything else happens.

The security process itself is real. The key has to be enrolled to the immobilizer or the car will not start, and that requires the right diagnostic equipment and the correct procedure for this generation. But the dealer markup on top of that process is steep, especially on a vehicle that is two decades old. The job itself does not take hours. A good tech with the right tools and the right blank can do it on site. You are mostly paying for the building and the brand name when you go the dealer route.

What exactly is a transponder key and how does it work on the 2004 I35?

It is a metal key with a transponder chip embedded in the plastic head. When you insert it and turn the ignition, the vehicle sends a signal to that chip. The chip responds with a code the immobilizer recognizes. If the code matches what is stored, the engine starts. If the chip is missing, unprogrammed, or programmed to a different vehicle, the immobilizer blocks the start. The engine may crank normally but it will not fire.

On the 2004 I35, there are no buttons, no remote, no fob battery. It is a turn-key system. The remote functions people sometimes associate with Infiniti keys from this era do not apply to this one. It is the transponder chip and the cut, and both have to be right.

Way less. Dealers on vehicles this age can be unpredictable about whether they even stock the blank, and the labor rate plus parts markup adds up fast. Call me for the current number. I have a spare key that was cut for my I35 but it will not start the car. Can it be programmed now, or is it too late?

Depends on what the blank is. If it is the correct transponder blank for the I35 and it just was never programmed, yes, it can be enrolled to the vehicle. A key that is cut but not programmed will turn the ignition and crank the engine, but the immobilizer will shut the fuel or spark before it fires. That is the tell. If that is what is happening, the cut is done and the blank is right, and all that is left is the programming step.

If someone cut a non-transponder blank by mistake, thinking the key was purely mechanical, that one cannot be programmed because there is no chip in it to enroll. Bring it when you call or describe the head of the key. I can usually tell from that whether it is worth finishing or whether you need a fresh correct blank.

I lost both keys to my 2004 I35. Does all-keys-lost make the job harder?

It does, a little. When at least one working key is present, adding a spare is the simpler path. All-keys-lost means the immobilizer has no reference key to work from during the programming sequence, so the procedure is different and takes a bit longer.

The other thing all-keys-lost should trigger: if the keys were stolen rather than just lost, the right move is to wipe the stored key data entirely and start fresh. That way any key that left with a thief is dead to your vehicle. I do not just add new keys on top of old ones in that situation. I clear the memory and enroll only the keys you are walking away with. It costs about the same and it is the only version of the job that actually closes the security gap.
