2003 Infiniti I35
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to making a spare?

More. Noticeably more. When you still have one working key, adding a spare is a clean OBD programming job. When every key is gone, the registered key data has to be cleared and new keys have to be enrolled from scratch, which takes additional steps and additional time. On the 2003 I35 specifically, this is a known procedure with the right equipment, so it's not impossible - but it costs more than a simple spare add.

Q: Do aftermarket keys work on the 2003 I35, or should I stick with OEM?

Professional-grade aftermarket blanks work reliably when they're sourced correctly. The ones I use are built to OEM spec for this application - correct chip type, correct blade profile, correct fitment. What doesn't work: the cheap clone keys floating around on marketplace sites. Locksmiths across Nissan and Infiniti forums consistently report those showing up with bad electronics, weak housings, and chips that either won't register or drop out after a few months.

Q: My 2003 I35 starts fine with one key but the other key cranks and won't fire. What's happening?

That's a classic unregistered or failed transponder chip. The immobilizer reads the chip in the key during the start sequence. If it doesn't see a recognized chip, it cuts fuel or spark and the engine dies immediately after cranking. One key working and one not is almost always a chip issue on the non-starting key, not an engine or fuel problem.

Q: Can I get a key made by VIN without towing the car to the dealer?

Yes, and that's exactly how I prefer to work. Your VIN tells me the key blade specification so I can cut the correct profile. For the transponder programming side, I work at the vehicle using the OBD port, so the car needs to be physically present - but it does not need to move. I come to wherever the I35 is sitting, whether that's your driveway in Midtown Ventura, a parking structure, or a lot.

2003 Infiniti I35 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Midtown Ventura called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He'd had his I35 cut at a hardware store a few weeks earlier because his original key was getting worn. The cut was fine. Car turned over, fired right up - once. Then the next morning, nothing. Crank, no start. He'd already swapped the battery in the car thinking that was it.

He wasn't sure what a transponder was. He thought the hardware store key guy would have handled everything. I hear that a lot.

I pulled up to his place off Main Street. He had both keys with him - the original worn one and the new hardware store copy. The original still started the car. The copy cranked it and killed it immediately, which is exactly what a non-programmed transponder key does on this system. The chip in the new blank had never been registered.

I programmed the copy to his car's immobilizer right there in his driveway. Both keys working, both verified through a few cold start cycles before I left. He asked why the hardware store guy didn't mention any of this. Honestly, a lot of them don't know, or they assume the customer knows to follow up. Now he has two keys that actually work, and a backup for the first time in years.

Dealer route for this would have been a tow or a drive-in, a wait for the service department, and a bill that made no sense for something this simple. He paid a fraction of that and didn't move the car once.

Infiniti I35 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2003 Infiniti I35 key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Infiniti dealers for this era typically quote a key replacement plus a programming fee, and if you don't have a working key to drive in, a tow gets added on top. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in Ventura, cut the blade, program the transponder chip on site, and verify it starts before I leave.
