I got a call from a guy parked at a dirt pullout near a canyon overlook just outside Simi Valley, over in the Royal/Kadota area. He was a landscape photographer and figured he'd lost his fob somewhere on the trail after a shoot. His 2017 Infiniti QX50 was sitting there with no key, no spare, and the nearest Infiniti dealer was a solid hour away.
He'd already called another locksmith before he called me. That guy's solution was to drill the emergency lock cylinder. The quote was painful, and it would have left him with a damaged door that needed more work on top of everything else.
I decoded his door lock mechanically, reading the wafer positions without touching anything destructive inside the cylinder. That gave me the cut depths I needed. I cut a new blade, built out a full replacement smart key with the correct battery, and ran the all-keys-lost sequence through the OBD port to register the new fob and wipe any memory of the missing one. The immobilizer accepted the new key, the remote functions tested clean, and his original door lock worked with the new blade exactly the way it always had.
He watched the whole thing from about ten feet away, arms crossed, not fully convinced until the moment it started. Then he just nodded and said he wished he'd called me first.
The dealer comparison came up on its own when he asked what this would have cost him down the road. I kept it simple: a lot more, and he'd have had to get a ride there and back.
