Camarillo Springs sits up against the hills and a lot of the homes there have covered carports tucked behind gates. That is exactly where I found myself on a Tuesday morning, parked next to a 2020 QX50 that had not moved in two days.
The owner -- retired, unhurried, genuinely puzzled -- had woken up to a key-not-detected warning and no explanation. He had the one fob. He had tried the battery already. Fresh CR2032, seated correctly, and the car still would not acknowledge the key. He was calm about it in the way people get when they have already accepted bad news. He told me he figured it was a tow and a dealer visit, and he was just waiting to confirm that.
I asked him to try holding the fob directly against the start button. Nothing. That told me it was not a simple signal range issue. The fob was not communicating at all.
I connected to the OBD port and pulled up the Infiniti smart key procedure. All-keys-lost on this system has a countdown built in -- you sit with it, you do not rush it. I walked him through what I was doing while the sequence ran, mostly because people standing there watching a laptop screen feel better when someone is talking them through it. Programmed the new fob, confirmed the start button woke up, tested the door handles, walked the lock and unlock at distance. The old fob, the one that had stopped working, got wiped out of the system in the same process.
He asked me twice if it was really done. It was.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a significant wait for an appointment on top of the parts and labor. He saved a good chunk coming out here instead.
