A guy pulled into the Camino Real Marketplace lot in Goleta and called me from the parking lot outside one of the bigger stores there. He had his 1999 Discovery and one key that would crank the engine but would not lock or unlock the doors remotely. He had been doing it manually for a few weeks, figured he would get around to it.
Then the blade snapped. Not the fob, just the metal part, right at the bow where it meets the head. He had been using it in a stiff door lock and the key blank on these 25-year-old trucks is not forgiving when there is side pressure on it. Now he had the fob half and a broken blade and no way into the truck or the ignition.
I came out to him. The fob housing was intact and the transponder side was fine. We cut a new blade to match the vehicle, transferred what needed to be transferred, and sorted out why the remote buttons had not been working. The CR2032 inside was so depleted it read nearly zero on the meter. New cell, cleaned the contacts, tested lock and unlock from across the lane.
He asked what the dealer would have taken for this. I told him a week, probably, because they would have wanted to order the key to VIN. He had a working key in about 40 minutes, standing next to his truck, same day he called.
