Got a call from a guy over near Camino Real Marketplace in Goleta. His 1999 Discovery wouldn't start. Key turned, dash lit up, starter cranked, engine caught for half a second and died. Classic immobilizer kill.
He had already replaced the starter relay and the fuel pump relay. Swapped the spark plugs. Bought a can of starting fluid and sprayed it into the intake. Nothing.
I pulled up and watched him try it. Engine would fire for maybe one beat, then the ECU cut fuel. That half-second catch is the tell. The Lucas 10AS immobilizer on these reads the TK5551A transponder during cranking, and if it doesn't get the right fixed code back, it shuts down fuel injection right after ignition fires. Looks exactly like a fuel delivery problem if you don't know what you're looking at.
His key blade was worn smooth and the plastic head had a hairline crack running right through where the transponder glass capsule sits. I could feel the chip rattling loose inside the housing.
Cut a fresh CWE100710 blank, seated a new ID13 transponder, and programmed it through the 10AS module. Car started and stayed running on the first turn.
He told me he had been chasing the fuel system for two weeks. Two weeks of parts and YouTube videos, and it was the key the whole time. He just stood there shaking his head at the hood.
