2002 Land Rover Discovery Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Thille/Montalvo, a guy flagged me down through a neighbor after spending a week trying to sort out his 2002 Discovery key.
The shell had cracked along the side, the key ring tab was nearly snapped through, and he had it held together with electrical tape. He figured he needed a whole new key. He had already called the Land Rover dealer and did not love the number they gave him.
When I got there and opened it up on my work tray, the circuit board and transponder were intact. The button membranes were still responsive. Everything that matters electronically was fine. The problem was purely the housing.
I transplanted the internals into a fresh shell, re-seated the CR2032, and tested both buttons across the parking lot. Lock, unlock, both clean. Then I verified the vehicle started normally and the remote cycled the doors the way it should.
He stood there looking at it like he expected more to happen. Sometimes the job is just knowing what actually needs to be replaced. He paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted him, and the whole thing took less time than the drive to the dealership would have.
