Got a call from the Saticoy area in Ventura. A guy with a 2002 Discovery said his key snapped right at the bow when he turned the ignition. Half the blade stayed inside the steering column lock.
When I got there he had the broken plastic head sitting on the dash, transponder board still visible through the crack. He told me he had tried needle-nose pliers on the stuck blade piece and made it worse, pushed it deeper into the wafer pack. Classic move. No judgment, everyone tries it.
I pulled the lower column cover to get a better angle on the Lucas lock cylinder. Extracted the broken blade fragment without pulling the whole cylinder, which saved a lot of time. Then I decoded the existing lock wafers to cut a fresh HU92 blade on site. The original CWE100710 housing was cracked badly, so I moved the transponder chip and remote board into a new compatible shell, seated a fresh CR2032, and tested the 5AS immobilizer handshake.
Engine cranked on the first turn. Walked both remote buttons, lock and unlock, from about 30 feet. He stood there watching the indicators flash and kept pressing lock like he was making sure it was real.
The whole thing took maybe 40 minutes in his driveway. He had already called the Land Rover dealer in the area and they quoted a week wait for parts alone.
