I was out near Ventura Harbor on a Tuesday, finishing up a different call by the marina parking area, when my phone picked up a new job. A guy had parked his 2001 Discovery to walk the waterfront and came back to a key that would physically turn but the truck was not going anywhere. The immobilizer had stopped recognizing the fob. He had one key, and now that one key was not doing its job.
He found me because I was already in the neighborhood. That part worked out.
The fob itself was worn down in the way old Land Rover keys get. The rubber on the buttons was cracked, the case had been dropped enough times that the seam had a little gap, and when I opened it up the CR2032 was reading low. That might have been part of the story, but a fresh battery alone was not going to fix the transponder situation. The immobilizer had lost its handshake with the chip and it needed to be relearned through the OBD port.
I cut a new remote head key on the portable machine, programmed the transponder to the vehicle right there in the lot, and tested the remote functions. Lock, unlock, everything confirmed. He drove off about thirty-five minutes after I pulled up.
He mentioned he had called the Land Rover dealer first. They told him to arrange a tow, order the part, and plan for several days. He was not surprised when I told him I had the blank in the van.
