2018 Land Rover Discovery Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy out in Dos Vientos on a Tuesday afternoon. He was standing in his driveway next to his 2018 Land Rover Discovery, which had decided it was done.
The fob had been acting up for a couple of weeks, range getting shorter, door handles not always responding, but he'd been ignoring it. Then that morning it just stopped. Key-not-detected on the dash, push-button start wouldn't wake up, doors wouldn't lock or unlock remotely.
He'd already called the Land Rover dealer. They told him to have it towed in, said they'd need to order the fob, and gave him a window of three to five days before the car would be back. He wasn't happy about that.
I pulled up, popped the fob open on the hood while he watched. The battery was original, still the one that came in the car from the factory. Five-plus years in a California fob that bakes in the sun will do that. Swapped in a fresh CR2032, reseated it properly, and tested the contact points while I was in there.
The fob came right back. All five buttons working, door handles responding, start button seeing the key the way it should. No programming needed because the fob itself was fine, it had just gone dark from a dead cell.
He got a little quiet for a second, then laughed and said he'd been mentally preparing to be without the car all week. Took me about ten minutes on his driveway. Way less than the dealer route, and he didn't have to tow anything anywhere.
