2022 Land Rover Discovery Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out at Ventura Harbor on a Tuesday, I got a call from a guy who had just gotten back from a long offshore fishing trip. Boat was docked, gear was off, and his Discovery would not respond to the fob at all.
Not the lock. Not the unlock. Nothing. He had hit the buttons dozens of times on the water without thinking about it, just checking habit, and by the time he walked up to the car the fob was completely unresponsive.
He had already tried holding the fob right up to the door handle. Still nothing.
I pulled in, he handed me the fob, and I could already see it was a battery issue before I even opened it. The CR2032 inside had dropped enough voltage that the key-not-detected warning was showing on the dash and the car was treating the fob like it was not there. I carry CR2032 cells, swapped it out, reseated the contacts, and walked him through the full button check right there in the parking lot.
Everything came back. All five buttons, door response, the whole system behaving normally.
He asked me what the dealer would have charged and how long it would have taken. I told him honestly that a fob that stops responding completely usually gets treated as a programming failure at the dealer, which means a diagnostic appointment, ordering a new fob, and coming back for programming. That is days, sometimes longer depending on parts availability. We wrapped up in under fifteen minutes.
He had a flight the next morning. It mattered.
