2023 Land Rover Discovery
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2023 Discovery?

The smart key is the fob your Discovery came with. It handles two separate jobs. The remote side handles locking, unlocking, and the other buttons. The start side has a programmed transponder that talks to the vehicle security system when you press the start button. Both have to work. If the fob is not recognized, the car will not start, even if the key blade physically fits. Programming ties the specific fob to your specific vehicle.

Q: How long does the Land Rover dealer actually take for a Discovery key replacement?

Longer than most people expect, and it varies a lot depending on parts availability. The fob itself often has to be ordered, not pulled off a shelf. Forum accounts from Discovery and other JLR owners describe waits ranging from about a week on the short end to several weeks when supply is slow. Once the part arrives, the programming appointment is a separate step. Total turnaround without your vehicle can stretch well beyond what the service advisor initially tells you.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2023 Discovery. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2023 Discovery does not have a DIY key relearn sequence. There is no button combination, no ignition-cycling trick, nothing you can do from the driver's seat to pair a new fob. Programming requires diagnostic equipment that communicates directly with the vehicle's security system through the OBD port. If you bought a fob online, it still needs a professional to pair it.

Q: The Discovery shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is fine. What is going on?

A key-not-detected warning with a good battery usually points to one of a few things. The fob's internal board or antenna can degrade, especially if the fob took a hard drop or got wet. The passive entry antennas in the door handles or around the car can develop faults that make the system lose the fob intermittently.

2023 Land Rover Discovery Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in Thille on a Tuesday afternoon, parked in front of a house where a 2023 Discovery was sitting in the driveway with a dead fob and an owner who had already called the dealer.

The dealer told her the fob had to be ordered through their parts system, and she was looking at days of waiting, plus the programming appointment after that. She had one key. No spare. That was it.

When I got there, she was using the emergency blade in the door handle just to get in and out. The car was driveable but she had been white-knuckling every trip, knowing one dead battery or one wrong pocket and she was stranded.

I pulled up alongside, laid everything out on the hood, and got to work. Cut the replacement key blade to match her vehicle, programmed the new fob through the OBD port with JLR-compatible diagnostic tools, and then ran the full check: passive entry on every door handle, lock and unlock from distance, all five buttons confirmed, start verified. She stood there watching the whole thing.

From the time I pulled up to the time I packed the tools back, it was under 45 minutes. She had a working key in her hand and a spare for the first time since she bought the car.

The dealer option was still sitting in her voicemail.

Land Rover Discovery Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Land Rover dealer to get a replacement smart key for my 2023 Discovery?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with JLR-compatible diagnostic equipment can cut and program a replacement smart key on site. The dealer will tell you the fob has to be ordered through their parts channel and then programmed at the shop, which is true for them. It is not true that you have to go through them. The programming happens through the OBD port using the same kind of diagnostic access a dealer uses.
