Got a call from someone out near Casitas Springs on a Tuesday morning. She had a 2021 Land Rover Discovery that had been sitting in her driveway for two days because her only fob had gone completely dark. No response, no lock, no unlock, nothing. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time she got close to the door handle.
She'd already been to the Land Rover dealer in the area. They told her the fob needed to be ordered, and the earliest they could get her car looked at was about three weeks out. She wasn't in a position to wait three weeks.
I pulled up, confirmed the VIN, checked ownership docs, and started with the basics. Popped the fob open to check the CR2032. It read low on the tester, borderline dead. Swapped it out. Still nothing from the fob once seated in the car. At that point it was clear the fob itself had failed, not just the battery.
Cut a replacement key blade to her vehicle, programmed the new fob using the diagnostic port with JLR-compatible equipment, synced it to the vehicle's security system, and walked all the functions. Touch unlock on both front handles, all five buttons, start. Everything came up clean on the first run.
The whole job was done at the end of her driveway. She didn't need a flatbed. She didn't need a loaner. She was back in the car before noon.
The dealer thing came up when she was signing off. She'd gotten a quote from them that was well more than double what she paid me. She just shook her head.
