2021 Land Rover Discovery
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile smart key replacement work for the 2021 Discovery?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the right fob for your vehicle and quote you a price on the phone. Then I come to your location with everything needed: the correct fob, cutting tools for the internal emergency blade, and diagnostic equipment compatible with Land Rover's security system.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Three things: your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership such as your registration or title. I verify the VIN from your dashboard or door jamb on arrival to confirm the correct key specs before I cut anything. That ownership check is standard practice whether you're at a dealer or calling me. It protects you as much as it protects the process.

Q: My 2021 Discovery fob still works for locking and unlocking but the car is throwing a key-not-detected warning at startup. What's going on?

This is one of the more common complaints on the Discovery forums. A few different things can cause it. First, CR2032 voltage. These fobs can still operate the door locks at reduced battery voltage but fail to communicate reliably with the vehicle's security system during the start sequence, which demands a stronger, sustained signal. Swap the battery first even if the fob seems to be "working. Second, interference.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2021 Land Rover Discovery. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2021 Discovery does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for smart key fobs. Registering a new fob to this vehicle requires professional diagnostic equipment that communicates with the vehicle's security system through the OBD port. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button combination that will do it. If you already bought the fob, it's not a total loss. Bring it to me and I can program it to your vehicle on site.

2021 Land Rover Discovery Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from someone out near Casitas Springs on a Tuesday morning. She had a 2021 Land Rover Discovery that had been sitting in her driveway for two days because her only fob had gone completely dark. No response, no lock, no unlock, nothing. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time she got close to the door handle.

She'd already been to the Land Rover dealer in the area. They told her the fob needed to be ordered, and the earliest they could get her car looked at was about three weeks out. She wasn't in a position to wait three weeks.

I pulled up, confirmed the VIN, checked ownership docs, and started with the basics. Popped the fob open to check the CR2032. It read low on the tester, borderline dead. Swapped it out. Still nothing from the fob once seated in the car. At that point it was clear the fob itself had failed, not just the battery.

Cut a replacement key blade to her vehicle, programmed the new fob using the diagnostic port with JLR-compatible equipment, synced it to the vehicle's security system, and walked all the functions. Touch unlock on both front handles, all five buttons, start. Everything came up clean on the first run.

The whole job was done at the end of her driveway. She didn't need a flatbed. She didn't need a loaner. She was back in the car before noon.

The dealer thing came up when she was signing off. She'd gotten a quote from them that was well more than double what she paid me. She just shook her head.

Land Rover Discovery Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2021 Land Rover Discovery somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. The whole job is mobile. I come to wherever your vehicle is, whether that's your driveway off Highway 33 near Casitas Springs, your workplace, or a parking lot anywhere in Ventura. Land Rover dealers typically require a working key to drive in, or a flatbed tow if you're locked out. Once the car is there, owners regularly report multi-week waits just for the parts to arrive before programming even starts. That's a long time to be without a vehicle.
