Got a call from a guy at one of the shops along the De La Vina corridor in Santa Barbara. He ran a landscaping crew and his 1998 Mazda Protege was the daily runner for hauling between job sites.
His only key was ground down to almost nothing. The cuts were so rounded off it would barely turn the ignition, and he had been jiggling it for months. Some mornings it took him five minutes of wiggling before the cylinder would rotate. He thought the ignition was going bad.
I pulled one of the door lock wafers and decoded the original cuts right there in the parking lot. The 1998 Protege uses the MZ24 keyway, a simple single-sided mechanical blank. No chip, no remote, no electronics to worry about. I cut a fresh key to the factory code on my mobile machine and slid it into the ignition.
Turned like butter. He just stood there rotating it back and forth a few times like he forgot what a smooth ignition felt like.
The worn key had been forcing the wafers sideways for so long I told him to keep an eye on it, but the cylinder accepted the new cut perfectly. He asked how much a dealer would have charged. I told him they probably would have replaced the whole ignition cylinder and sold him a new key set on top of it. He got a working key for a fraction of that.
