1998 Mazda Protege
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Mazda to the dealer for a replacement key?

Not for a 1998 Protege. This is a metal key cut to your lock. We come to you, decode the door or ignition, and cut a working key right there. Dealers will sometimes steer you toward a tow anyway because it's how their service process works, but there's nothing about this vehicle that requires you to be on their lot. Save the tow fee and call a mobile locksmith instead.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. We verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or door jamb before we cut anything. That's standard practice whether you go to a locksmith or a dealer. We do it on site in a few minutes, and then we get to work. Same standard, no waiting for a callback or an appointment slot.

Q: My key turns but the ignition feels stiff or won't turn at all. Is the key worn out?

On a Protege this age, a stiff or stuck ignition is usually the cylinder itself, not just the key. Worn tumblers inside the ignition can get finicky over time, especially with a key that's been copied once or twice and has accumulated small cutting errors with each generation. A key that was cut from a copy of a copy may be just enough off-spec to bind in an aging cylinder. First, try the original key if you have it.

Q: Can a hardware store duplicate this key, or do I need a locksmith?

A hardware store can duplicate it if you have a working key in hand. The risk is key-copy drift: each generation of duplication picks up small tolerances that add up. For a daily driver on a 25-year-old lock, that matters more than it would on a new car with a tight cylinder.

1998 Mazda Protege Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Presidio flagged me down outside a shop on Chapala. Not exactly flagged down, but he saw the van and came over fast enough that it felt that way.

He had a 1998 Mazda Protege and the key had snapped off at the bow. Not bent, not worn, actually snapped. Half was still in his pocket and the other half was somewhere in the parking lot gravel. He'd already called a dealer and the word "tow" came up in the first thirty seconds of that conversation.

I pulled out the broken piece from the key ring and used it to confirm the key profile. Decoded the door lock to double-check the cut, then cut a fresh key on site right there on Chapala. Took maybe fifteen minutes, most of which was me chatting with him about why he kept the broken piece clipped to a full key ring like it might still work someday.

No tow. No dealer. No waiting three days for a callback.

He drove off toward the 101 with a new key on his ring and a spare in his glove box. The dealer comparison barely came up. It was just the obvious way to handle it.
