2000 Mazda Protege
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for this car?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN, and I confirm the right blank for your Protege before I head out. When I arrive, I either decode the cut from your existing key or read it from the door lock if you have nothing left to work from. I cut the replacement on site, test it in both the door and the ignition, and hand it to you. No tow, no waiting room, no second trip.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you show up?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, your registration works fine. I pull the VIN off the dashboard or door jamb to confirm the key specs before I cut anything. If the car came with a key code tag when it was new, and some still do floating around in glove boxes, that can speed things up. But it is not required. I can work from the lock itself.

Q: I only have one key for my 2000 Protege. Should I get a spare cut now or wait until I actually lose it?

Get the spare now. Not because I am trying to sell you a second key, but because the math is obvious. While you have a working key in hand, making a copy is the fastest, cheapest version of this job. If that one key goes missing, I am now decoding the lock or pulling the ignition cylinder to recover the cut, which takes longer and costs more. One working key in your possession is the best tool I have.

Q: My key turns but feels stiff in the ignition on my 2000 Protege. Is the key worn or is it the cylinder?

Could be either. Worn keys and worn cylinders tend to happen together on older cars because they wear against each other over time. First thing to check: does a different key for the same car turn more smoothly. If yes, the key is the problem and a fresh-cut replacement usually solves it. If every key feels stiff, the cylinder itself is worn or dry.

2000 Mazda Protege Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over in Saticoy, a first-year teacher had just picked up a used 2000 Mazda Protege from a coworker. Good little car, reasonable deal, and exactly one key between her and the world.

She called the Mazda dealer first. The quote they gave her was real, and it was a lot for someone three weeks into her first teaching job. She found me online and asked if the dealer number was legitimate. I told her it probably was. Dealers have their process and their overhead. What I told her next was that for a car this age with a mechanical key, the work itself is just cutting metal.

I met her in the lot after school. She had the original key with her, which made everything faster. I decoded the cut right off the existing key, pulled the right blank, and ran it through my cutter. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition, handed it over.

She held both keys up next to each other for a second like she was comparing them. They were identical. That was the point.

She left with a spare for a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and if she ever loses one now, the second key is right there waiting.

Mazda Protege Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2000 Mazda Protege somewhere for a key replacement?▼

No. I come to you. Whether you are parked in a lot in Saticoy, sitting in your driveway in Ventura, or stuck somewhere in between, I bring the blank and the cutter to your vehicle. The 2000 Protege takes a mechanical key, so there is no equipment that requires a shop bay. The whole job happens right outside your car door.
