2002 Mazda Protege
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2002 Mazda Protege use?

A standard metal key cut to your vehicle's specific lock pattern. No remote functions, no fob battery, no buttons. It works the door locks mechanically and turns the ignition cylinder to start the car. Replacement is a cutting job, not a programming job. Bring the key code if you have it, or I decode the lock directly and cut from that.

Q: How long does the dealer process take compared to a mobile locksmith for this car?

With a dealer, you're usually looking at getting the car there first, then waiting on their schedule, and sometimes waiting on a blank to come in if they don't stock it. For a 20-plus-year-old Mazda, that last part is more common than you'd think. Owners have reported being told to leave the car and come back, or wait several days for a part. On my end, the 2002 Protege is a one-visit job.

Q: My 2002 Protege key turns but feels rough or gets stuck. Do I need a new ignition cylinder?

Not necessarily. On a car this age, the key itself wears down before the cylinder does. The blade gets rounded off from years of use, and a worn key creates that rough, sticky feeling even when the cylinder is still fine. Before replacing anything, get a fresh key cut to the original code or decoded from the lock. A lot of the time that's all it takes.

Q: Can I get a key made if I have absolutely no working key left for the car?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2002 Protege is still a cuttable job. I decode the door lock or ignition cylinder directly and cut a new key from that. No original key needed to make it happen.

2002 Mazda Protege Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a photographer who was renting a place near Surfers Point in Ventura for a coastal shoot. She'd driven down from out of town, parked near the water, and somehow her only key ended up locked inside the car.

She needed to be on location the next morning, and the nearest Mazda dealer told her they couldn't help until they had the car towed in and a slot open on the schedule, which wasn't happening same day.

She found me online and I was there that evening.

The 2002 Protege is one of the cleaner jobs in my rotation. No fob to source, no programming to run, no waiting on the immobilizer to cooperate. I got into the car, decoded the lock, and cut a replacement blade on the spot in the van. Slid it in, turned over on the first try.

She was back on her feet well before dark with a working spare in her hand, for a fraction of what the dealer would have charged even if they could have seen her that week. The job took longer to explain than it did to do.

Mazda Protege Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Mazda dealer to get a replacement key for a 2002 Protege?▼

Not at all. The 2002 Protege takes a straightforward metal key, and any qualified automotive locksmith can cut one on site. A dealer is one option, but they'll typically need the car there in person and may not have the blank on hand. A mobile locksmith can decode the lock or pull the key code and cut a replacement right where the car is parked, whether that's your driveway, a parking lot near Surfers Point, or wherever you're stuck.
