Over near Surfers Point in Ventura, a guy flagged me down at the duplex row off the side street. His 2001 Protege LX was sitting in the driveway with both doors locked and his only key snapped off in the driver's door lock.
The blade had broken right at the bow, clean snap. Half was still in his hand, the other half was jammed in the lock cylinder. He had already called the Mazda dealer and they told him to tow it in. For a mechanical key. On a Protege.
I pulled the broken blade fragment out of the cylinder with an extractor, checked the wafers for damage, and they were fine. No binding, no bent wafers. The lock was just stiff from years of coastal salt air and zero lubrication. I cut a fresh key by code using the Mazda key code from the door lock, matched it to the original Mazda X8 keyway blank, and tested ignition, driver door, passenger door, and trunk.
While I was there I hit both door cylinders and the ignition with dry lubricant. The key turned like it was new. He just stood there spinning it back and forth in the ignition, surprised at how smooth it was compared to what he had been dealing with.
No chip to program, no module to talk to, no tow needed. Just a cut key and a ten-minute fix at the curb.
