Got a call from someone out near Ventura River Preserve in Ventura. A 1997 S-Class, the big W140 body, sitting in a gravel pull-off. Owner had one key left and it was acting up. The remote would not lock or unlock anything, and every few starts the immobilizer would hang for a second before releasing.
When I got there the car was just sitting in the shade looking like it weighed about two tons more than everything around it. The owner handed me the key and said, "The dealer told me they don't even work on these anymore."
I popped the key apart on my bench. The CR2025 was dead, which explained the remote. But the transponder side was the real concern. These W140 keys use the older DAS immobilizer with an IR transponder, and the antenna ring around the ignition column on this one had a corroded connector. Cleaned the pins, replaced the battery, tested the infrared signal with my receiver. Strong pulse.
Started it up, let it cycle through the DAS handshake without any hesitation. Locked and unlocked all four doors from 20 feet out. Opened the trunk with the remote.
The owner kept looking at the key like it was brand new. Same key, just actually working again. He had been quoted a full key replacement plus a tow into the dealer an hour away. Instead, I handled it in his parking spot in about 40 minutes for a fraction of what they wanted.
