Got a call from over near Old Mission Santa Barbara. Guy had a 2001 S430, only key stopped turning the ignition. He had already called the Mercedes dealer and they told him the car needed to be towed in, the EIS module would need to be read, and the key might have to be ordered from Germany. Timeline was "a few weeks, possibly longer." He went quiet on the phone for a second after telling me that part.
I drove out and met him in the parking area. The key looked rough. Blade was worn down, the shoulder cuts were rounding off, and the tip had a slight bend from years of jiggling it in the ignition. Classic W220 wear pattern.
I pulled the EIS data through the OBD port on my diagnostic setup, got the key profile, and cut a fresh HU64 blade on my portable machine. Programmed the transponder to match his EIS slot. Then I tested the infrared remote, all four buttons, doors locking and unlocking, trunk, panic. Fired the engine. Smooth turn, no binding.
He kept the old key as a backup after I explained it would still program-match the car but would just keep chewing up the ignition cylinder if he used it daily.
Whole thing took less than an hour, right there in the lot. No tow truck. No weeks of waiting. A fraction of what the dealer quoted him.
