Got a call from down near Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara. A 2003 S-Class, S500 trim, sitting in a lot with no working keys. Owner had one key left, and it had stopped turning in the ignition a few days earlier. He'd been wiggling it to get it to catch, and then one morning it just quit.
That's a textbook W220 EIS problem. The ignition switch module on these has NEC MCU chips that degrade over time. The solder joints fatigue, the internal flash corrupts, and eventually the EIS stops recognizing any key at all. Mercedes forums are full of W220 owners describing the same slow death: key works sometimes, then less, then never.
I pulled the EIS from the steering column, read the module on the bench with the IM608, and found exactly what I expected. Corrupted key data in the NEC chip. Renewed the module, programmed a fresh key blank with the correct IR transponder data, cut it to the HU64 profile on the laser cutter right there on site.
The moment I put it all back together and his new key turned smooth with zero wiggle, he just sat there turning it back and forth like he was testing it. I get that. When something has been fighting you for weeks, you don't trust the fix right away.
He kept his old key as a backup for the doors. Whole job done in the parking lot, no tow truck, no dealer wait.
