Got a call from a guy out near Rincon Beach Park in Ventura. His 1998 S-Class S320 wouldn't turn over. Remote did nothing, key turned in the ignition but the engine just cranked and died. Classic immobilizer lockout.
He had already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in, quoted him a wait time measured in weeks because the EIS module on these W140s is old enough that parts sourcing gets complicated. He said no thanks.
I pulled up, popped the fob open on his hood. The CR2025 was corroded around the edges, and the IR transmitter board looked like it had been swimming. Cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh battery, and the remote came back to life. But the no-start was a separate issue.
On the W140, the immobilizer system talks through the EIS (Electronic Ignition Switch, part number 140 545 01 08 on many of these) and the transponder chip in the key head. His transponder signal was weak. I read the EIS, matched the transponder data, and programmed a fresh remote head key with a new chip aligned to his car. Cut the HU64 blade on site.
He sat in a camp chair watching the ocean the whole time. When I handed him two working keys, he just nodded and said, "That's it?" That was it. No tow truck, no weeks of waiting around.
