Got a call from a guy near Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. His 2006 S350 just stopped starting in the hospital parking lot. Remote still locked and unlocked the doors no problem, but the dash was showing "Key not recognized" and the engine would not crank.
He had already called Mercedes. They told him to tow it in, quoted a week minimum for diagnosis, and said it could be the EIS module, the steering lock, or the key itself. He was visiting someone in the hospital and did not have a week.
I pulled up, plugged into the OBD port, and read the EIS. The NEC chip data was intact, the key's infrared was communicating, but the key profile had corrupted in the EIS memory. This happens on FBS3 W221s more than people realize. The NEC processors in these modules develop read errors over time, especially on original units with high thermal cycling.
Rewrote the key data back to the EIS, cleared the steering lock fault, and tested the start sequence three times cold. Fired right up every time. He sat in the driver seat for a second after the engine caught, just listening to it idle, like he was waiting for something to go wrong again.
Whole thing took about 40 minutes in the parking lot. No tow, no week at the dealer, no guessing.
