1999 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy over by The Collection at RiverPark in Oxnard. His 1999 S-Class S500 would not respond to the key at all. No remote lock, no remote unlock, and when he put the key in the EIS ignition switch, the dash just sat there with a steering lock warning.
He had already gone online and read every forum thread about W220 EIS failures and was convinced the whole module was dead. Said the dealer quoted him weeks of wait time for parts and labor that made him reconsider owning the car.
I got there and started with the key itself. Popped the shell apart on his hood. The CR2025 was corroded enough that the negative terminal had a film of green across it. The NEC chip legs on the PCB looked okay under magnification, but one of the infrared emitter solder points had a hairline crack. Classic on these older IYZ-3312 boards.
Cleaned the battery contacts, reflowed the IR emitter joint, dropped in a fresh CR2025, and reassembled. Key went into the EIS, dash lit up, steering lock released, engine turned over.
He just stood there watching the car idle for about ten seconds like he was waiting for it to stall.
No new EIS module. No new key. Just a board-level fix on site for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost him.
