Got a call from a guy near the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. His 2002 S430 was sitting in a parking spot and would not turn over. Dash just said "Key not accepted" and the steering lock would not release. He had already been on the phone with the dealer and they told him it could be the EIS module, the ESL steering lock, or the key itself, and that he would need a tow plus a couple of weeks to sort it out.
When I got there he was sitting on a bench, watching his car like it owed him money.
I pulled out the Autel and read the EIS. The NEC chip in his key had lost its marriage to the module. This happens on W220s with the older NEC MCU-based EIS. The chip data drifts or the key's internal board develops a hairline crack from years of pocket carry. His second spare key, the one he kept in a drawer, still fired the car right up. That told me the EIS was fine.
I rebuilt his primary key on site. New virgin NEC chip on a fresh 5WK47283 board, wrote the key data from the EIS, cut a new HU64 blade to match, and tested IR communication through the column window. Whole job took about 40 minutes in the parking lot.
He kept looking at the dash after it started, like it was going to change its mind. It did not.
Saved him a tow, a rental, and a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted for an EIS replacement he did not even need.
