2004 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy near the Santa Barbara Zoo with a 2004 S-Class S500 that wouldn't turn over. He had one working key left, and it had started acting up over the past week. Some mornings it fired right up. Other mornings, nothing. Just the dash lighting up and the starter refusing to crank.
He'd already called the Mercedes dealer. They told him to tow it in, quoted him a wait of over a week just to look at it, and mentioned the key might need to be ordered from overseas. He wasn't thrilled about leaving his car sitting.
I pulled up, plugged into the OBD port, and read the EIS module. The existing key's transponder data was still good in the system, but the key itself was intermittent. The infrared emitter in the head was weak, and the CR2025 was reading low voltage even though he said he'd replaced it a few months back. Off-brand CR2025 cells do that. They sag under load faster than a Duracell or Energizer.
Cut a new remote head key to the factory HU64 profile, programmed the transponder to the EIS, paired the 4-button remote, and tested every function. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Then a cold start, restart, and one more restart just to prove the intermittent was gone.
He stood there watching the whole thing, arms crossed, like he was waiting for it to fail again. It didn't. Whole job done on site, no tow, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him just to start diagnosing.
