Got a call from someone parked at El Capitan State Beach in Santa Barbara. He had a 2010 S-Class S550, and his only key had stopped turning the ignition. The IR window on the back of his chrome SmartKey was caked with sunscreen. I am not joking. Cleaned it, tested the battery, still a good CR2025, and re-synced the key to the EIS.
Steering column unlocked. Engine turned over. He just sat there with his hands on the wheel for a second, like he was making sure it was real.
The whole thing took about 35 minutes. He did not need a new key, did not need a tow, and did not need to leave his S-Class in a beach lot for a week. Just the right diagnosis done on the spot for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost him.
