1997 Pontiac Grand Am
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is involved in replacing a mechanical key like this one?

It comes down to two things: getting the correct key cut and making sure it works in your locks and ignition. If you still have a working key, we duplicate it directly. If you have lost all keys, we either pull the key code from your VIN through GM's records or decode one of your lock cylinders on the spot. Either way, we cut the blade to your vehicle and test it in every cylinder before we leave.

Q: What tools do you actually use to cut a key for this car?

For cutting, I run the Xhorse Dolphin or Condor depending on the job. Both are precision machines that produce a clean, accurate cut from code or from a decode reading. For extraction jobs or decoding a worn cylinder, I use a separate set of hand tools built for lock work.

Q: My ignition is stiff and sometimes won't turn even with the original key. Is that a key problem or something else?

Almost always the cylinder, not the key. By the late 1990s, GM ignition cylinders on these cars had logged a lot of cycles, and the wafers inside wear down or stick. A stiff or intermittently binding ignition is a known annoyance on this generation. If your original key is turning hard, a freshly cut duplicate will feel the same or worse. The fix is cylinder service or replacement, not a new key.

Q: I lost my only key. Can you still make one without me having to tow the car anywhere?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 1997 Grand Am is a mobile job. I come to you in Wagon Wheel or anywhere in the Oxnard area, decode the door or ignition lock on site, cut the key, and you are done. No tow, no dealer visit, no waiting days for a parts order. The whole call typically wraps in under thirty minutes.

1997 Pontiac Grand Am Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Wagon Wheel, I got a call from a guy who'd snapped his key off in the door lock. Not in the ignition, in the door. He'd been using the driver door to unlock the whole car for years and finally pushed his luck on a stiff cylinder one cold morning.

He had the broken shank sitting in his palm when I pulled up. The other half was still in the cylinder.

I extracted the broken piece, then decoded the lock right there to get the key cut. No VIN lookup needed, the lock told me everything. Cut the new key on the Dolphin, checked it in the door, checked it in the ignition. Both turned clean.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a tow, a cylinder replacement, and a new key, all bundled together. He didn't need any of that. Just an extraction, a decode, and a cut. The whole thing took about twenty minutes on his driveway, for a fraction of what they wanted.

Pontiac Grand Am Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1997 Pontiac Grand Am key have any buttons or a remote?▼

No. The 1997 Grand Am key is a plain metal key with no remote, no fob, and no buttons. Lock and unlock the doors the old-fashioned way, key in the cylinder. There is nothing to program and no battery to replace.
