Got a call from a guy up in San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito. His 2000 Grand Am SE wouldn't respond to the remote at all. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, nothing. He had already gone through two CR2032 batteries from the gas station because someone online told him it was always the battery.
When I got there, I popped the KOBUT1BT open on his trunk lid. The battery contacts inside the remote housing had a film of green corrosion on them. The board itself, the one marked with the FCC ID on the back, looked fine. But those little spring contacts were not making a clean connection no matter how fresh the CR2032 was.
Cleaned the contacts, seated a known-good CR2032, and held the lock and unlock buttons through the on-board programming sequence to re-sync it with the BCM. All four buttons came back. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. I stood about 20 feet away and tested range. Solid.
He told me the dealer quoted him days of wait time for a replacement remote plus a programming appointment. He almost ordered one off eBay but didn't know if it would work without programming. Whole thing took me maybe 15 minutes on site. He didn't need a new remote. He needed someone who would actually open the thing up and look.
