Got a call from a guy near Butterfly Beach in Montecito. His 2001 Grand Am was sitting in the driveway with no way to unlock it. Both remotes dead, and he'd been using the remote so long he forgot the driver's door lock had been getting stiff for months.
He already called his dealer. They told him the fob was discontinued from GM's parts catalog, suggested an aftermarket unit, and said to bring the car in so they could program it. He asked how long. A week, maybe, depending on their schedule. For a remote.
I showed up with a KOBUT1BT and a fresh CR2032 in my kit. Popped the battery in, paired the remote right there in his driveway using the standard GM learn procedure through the BCM. Hold lock and unlock together, the door locks cycle, you press lock, done. Took about five minutes for both a new primary and a spare.
While I was there I hit the driver's lock cylinder with some dry lubricant and worked the mechanical key in and out a few times. Told him to use it once a week so it doesn't seize up on him again. The cylinders on these N-body Grand Ams get sticky when they sit unused.
He kept clicking the buttons on the new fob like he was making sure it was real. Whole thing was done on site for a fraction of what the dealer quoted just for the appointment.
