2001 Pontiac Grand Am
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I lost my original fob. How do I know which replacement remote fits my 2001 Grand Am?

You do not need to know the factory FCC ID off your old fob. That information is on the fob itself, which you no longer have. I identify the correct replacement by year, make, model, and sometimes the vehicle's option codes if there is any question. The part number and FCC ID on the replacement I bring will match what your car expects. You do not need to chase that down yourself.

Q: I lost all my keys to my 2001 Grand Am. Can you still make a new one?

Yes, and it is one of the more common calls I get. No existing key needed. I come to the vehicle, decode the lock cylinder or pull the key code through other means, cut a fresh key, and sync a new remote. The car does not know the difference between a key made today and one that came with the vehicle in 2001.

Q: My 2001 Grand Am fob stopped working after I replaced the battery. What happened?

This one comes up a lot, and it is almost always one of two things. First: the battery swap knocked the remote out of sync. These fobs can lose their learned signal if power is interrupted in a certain way, especially if the contacts were touched or the fob was left open for a while. The fix is a re-sync to the vehicle, which takes about two minutes and does not require any tools on this generation.

Q: Can I program a replacement fob myself on a 2001 Grand Am?

On this generation, there is an onboard relearn sequence that some owners have done themselves. It involves cycling the door locks in a specific pattern using the existing working remote or the door lock switch. The catch: you need at least one working remote to enter the programming mode on most of these. If you have zero working fobs, that route is closed and you need someone with the right equipment to get back in.

2001 Pontiac Grand Am Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was up in the Upper Village area of Montecito on a Tuesday afternoon. A woman had locked her keys inside her 2001 Grand Am outside a shop on Coast Village Road, and by the time she called me she had already tried the spare fob her ex had left in the house. Dead battery in that one too.

I got there, got her into the car in a few minutes, then she asked if I could just make her a whole new remote while I was standing there. The original fob was worn down, the rubber on the lock button had gone soft, and she figured it was a good time.

I had the right fob shell and a fresh CR2032 on the van. Cut a new key blade to her vehicle, transferred everything over, synced the remote to the car right there in the parking lot. Took maybe twenty minutes total once the car was open.

She mentioned she had called the dealer earlier in the week just to get a price. The number they gave her made her put the phone down. She was not expecting what I charged.

I did not make a big deal of it. That is just the job.

What battery does the 2001 Pontiac Grand Am key fob use?▼

CR2032. It is one of the most common fob batteries out there, which is good because it is easy to find at any drugstore or hardware store. That said, not all CR2032 cells are equal. Cheap off-brand cells can read as "full" in a tester and still deliver inconsistent voltage, which shows up as weak range or a fob that works sometimes and not others.
