I was parked along Butterfly Beach in Montecito on a Tuesday morning, watching the water, when the call came in. A guy had just bought a used 2003 Grand Am and it came with one working key and a fob that barely responded from three feet away. He wanted a spare before the one key he had gave out entirely.
I met him in the lot near the beach. He handed me the fob first. I popped it open right on my work mat and the CR2032 was still the original cell - you could tell by how flat and chalky the label had gone. New battery, reseated the contact, handed it back. Suddenly he had range again. That part took about four minutes.
The bigger job was cutting and programming a second key. I decoded the existing key blade and cut a new one to match, then ran the transponder enrollment through the OBD port so the immobilizer would accept it. Tested the start. Worked. Then I walked through all four fob buttons with him standing right there, watching the car respond.
He mentioned he had called the dealer first. They wanted him to leave the car and come back in two days. That was the part that surprised him more than anything - not the price difference, just the two days.
I was back on the 101 before noon.
