Got a call from a guy up in Upper Village in Montecito. His 2003 Grand Am was sitting in the driveway, doors locked, no spare. The original KOBLEAR1XT remote had been through the washing machine about a week earlier. He dried it out, it sort of worked for a few days, then nothing.
When I got there he had the remote apart on a paper towel on the hood. The CR2032 was new, so he'd already tried that. But the board inside, the one marked with the FCC ID KOBLEAR1XT, had visible corrosion on two of the contact pads from the water damage. No amount of battery swapping was going to fix that.
Cut a new key blade to code, set up a fresh KOBLEAR1XT with all four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Programmed the remote through the standard GM pairing sequence. Then I checked the Passlock II system since the car had been sitting. Cranked it, SECURITY light cycled off clean, engine caught on the first turn.
He kept picking up the old remote and looking at it like maybe it would come back to life. It wouldn't. Water and circuit boards don't forgive each other.
Whole thing took about 25 minutes in his driveway. He'd already called the dealer and been quoted a wait of several days just for parts. We were done before lunch.
