2005 Pontiac Grand Am Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Pole Creek Trail in Fillmore, a Grand Am owner called me because his remote had stopped locking and unlocking and then, separately, the car refused to start. He assumed both problems came from the same bad key. Everybody does.
I got there and popped the KOBLEAR1XT open on his tailgate. The CR2032 was corroded, green crust on one contact. Swapped it, cleaned the board contacts, and the four buttons came back to life: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Range was solid from 30 feet away. That was the easy half.
The no-start was Passlock II. The SECURITY light on the dash was on solid, and the starter would crank but the engine cut out after about two seconds. Classic behavior. The Passlock sensor in the ignition cylinder was sending the wrong resistance value to the body control module (BCM). I ran the relearn procedure, which takes about ten minutes of key-on waiting for the light to cycle off three times, then a brief key-off reset.
After that, the car fired right up. He kept looking back and forth between the remote and the ignition like they were supposed to be connected. I explained they are completely independent systems. The remote talks to the BCM for locks. The Passlock sensor in the cylinder talks to the BCM for fuel. Two different conversations.
